2008 Harriman Gold Medal Award Winner
The Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis is proud to be the recipient
of the 2008 E. H. Harriman Gold Medal for Group S&T (switching and terminal companies).
This award recognizes our commitment to safety and our proud tradition of being
recognized for our employee safety record.
The annual E.H. Harriman rail employee safety awards were founded in 1913 by the late
Mrs. Mary W. Harriman in memory of her husband, Edward H. Harriman. Mr. Harriman was a pioneer
and towering figure in the history of American railroading. The awards were continued after
Mrs. Harriman’s death by her two sons, E. Roland Harriman and the Honorable W. Averell Harriman.
Since the death of both sons, the awards have been administered by the E.H. Harriman Memorial
Awards Institute, with support from the Mary W. Harriman Foundation.
Winners are chosen by a committee of individuals in the transportation field. Recipients are
judged on the basis of the lowest casualty rates per 200,000 employee-hours worked. This formula
accounts for the volume of work performed, as well as the number of fatalities, injuries and
occupational illnesses confirmed by the FRA (Federal Railroad Administration).
Awards are given to railroads in the following categories:
• Group A: line-haul railroads, with 15 million employee-hours, or more.
• Group B: line-haul railroads with 4 to 15 million employee-hours.
• Group C: line-haul railroads with fewer than 4 million employee-hours.
• Group S&T: switching and terminal companies - like TRRA.
The 2008 award adds to our proud history of E.H. Harriman awards.
