Harriman Gold Medal Award Winner
“Last year was the safest in history for the rail employees of the nation’s
railroad industry,” Edward R. Hamberger, president and chief executive officer
of the Association of American Railroads told a luncheon in Washington at which
12 railroads with the best employee safety records for 2003 were recognized
through presentation of the annual E.H. Harriman Memorial Safety Awards.
Gold,
silver and bronze medal awards went to companies in three groups of line-haul
railroads, and to a fourth group of switching and terminal companies. Norfolk
Southern Corporation took top honors for the fourteenth consecutive year in
Group A, comprised of line-haul railroads whose employees worked 15 million
employee-hours or more during the award year. In this category, the silver award
went to CSX Transportation while Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway took
the bronze. In Group B, line-haul railroads with 4 to 15 million employee-hours,
Illinois Central (Canadian National) took the gold medal, after winning the
silver medal last year. Metra, the Chicago commuter railroad, took the silver
medal, while Kansas City Southern won the bronze medal. In Group C, line-haul
railroads with fewer than 4 million employee-hours, Guilford Rail System took
the gold medal after winning the silver medal a year ago. The silver medal went
to the Elgin Joliet and Eastern, while the Paducah and Louisville earned the
bronze for the second consecutive year. For Group S&T, switching and
terminal companies, the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis won the gold
medal for the second consecutive year, an incredible industry achievement.
Conrail Shared Assets was named winner of the silver medal, while the
Belt Railway of Chicago took the bronze medal.
